February 26, 2012, Palmerston North – Evelyn Stevens has successfully defended the yellow jersey she won from teammate Kristin Armstrong in yesterday’s forth stage to claim the overall title for the 2012 edition of the Women’s Tour of New Zealand.
Evie said of her win that she was proud to hold onto the jersey through the final day of the tour, “Team USA worked incredibly hard for the whole five stages to defend the jersey and it’s an absolute honor to finish with it still on my shoulders”.
Evie admitted to being ‘a little bit nervous’ heading into the fifth and final stage but had some unorthodox ways of keeping her nerves at bay, with her Specialized Lululemon and Team USA teammate Ally Stacher tweeting, “Yep @evelyn_stevens is trying to do the crow pose on her bed. While we continue to play the same song over and over.”
Her overall success didn’t come without stress however. Heading into the stage Evie had a less than comfortable lead of five seconds on Shara Gillow of GreenEdge, by the end of the 119km circuit race the lead had been worn down to a mere one second advantage.
Evie’s overall success caps off what was a successful week of racing for Specialized Lululemon after teammate Loren Rowney claimed the second stage in a bunch sprint and won the green sprinters jersey overall.
Specialized Lululemon’s next race kick off on Wednesday with the GP Samyn in Belgium.
